Kurikulum Merdeka became the latest topic of discussion in the world of education in Indonesia. The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology published the new curriculum, with the aim of learning recovery and expanding the curriculum prototype.
With the new curriculum being set in motion, the ABC Kids and Brighton JHS schools conducted a webinar titled “Yuk Cari Tau Tentang Kurikulum Baru” on Tuesday (23/3). Rahmat Hidayat, the spokesperson from the Education Office in West Java, along with the schools’ principal and teachers, attended the event.
This webinar was meant for educators and institutions. Rahmat informed that the new education curriculum would focus on the essential learning materials and allow flexibility in learning. Considering the current digital era and the different generations (generation X, millennials, generation Z, generation Alpha) existing, the new curriculum shall aim to cater to the generations mentioned earlier. According to Rahmat, every generation is different from one another, noting that generation Alpha seems to have a greater understanding of technology and seems to be the most educated ones. However, he added that it does not imply that the other generations are not educated.
The change in the education curriculum is definite, as such that the new prototype will build on the previous curriculum. All school subjects will already be digitalized.
“The new curriculum will focus on competence instead of content,” Rahmat said.
Depending on the digital preparedness of each school, schools may implement the Kurikulum Merdeka in stages. Hence, the curriculum toolkits are prepared in a digitalized and systematic manner.
Rahmat explained three advantages to Kurikulum Merdeka. First, the new curriculum is straightforward, in-depth, learned without rush, and more fun. Second, there is more freedom and no elective major. Lastly, it is relevant and more interactive.
The curriculum changes aim to develop a more holistic approach to learning. It is designed to develop academic and non-academic excellence skills and cognitive, emotional, and social competence. Rahmat also added that the new curriculum should depend on the context of the students or even the institution.
He quoted Ms. Ratih, a teacher, that “while teachers may have taught a class for ten years, due to the nature of the old curriculum that is repetitive and less holistic, the actual teaching experience in itself is only one year.” Rahmat further explained that such a statement implies the inefficiencies of the old curriculum.
Thus, with the new Kurikulum Merdeka being implemented, schools can opt for one of the following available curricula: Kurikulum 2013, Kurikulum Darurat (a simplified version of K13), or Kurikulum Merdeka.
