Marlene Yosephine Tanubrata (12), student from Brighton JHS Depok, made an impressive debut at PON XXI 2024, held in Aceh-North Sumatra. Representing Jakarta, the 7th grader took home a silver medal in the Park Women Open category.
Marlene’s journey into skateboarding began in a uniquely personal way, as she learned the sport from her father, Mario Yosafat, who built a private skateboarding arena for her to practice. “After finally enjoying skateboarding, I started joining competitions,” said Marlene. Her first national competition took place in Bali, where she participated in the national selection, though she didn’t win. However, this experience ignited her passion and determination to train harder, both physically and mentally.
Reflecting on her recent success at PON 2024, Marlene shared her joy and gratitude. “I thank God for this victory, but I also have mixed feelings about winning this competition. I am always grateful because my parents, teachers, and friends consistently support me,” she said.
Marlene has participated in various competitions. She has won titles in local and national events, such as Fornas, Piala Inu Negara, NasChamp, and even participated in an international skateboarding competition in Singapore.
Reflecting on her journey, Marlene credits her family, especially her father, for supporting her throughout her skateboarding career. “I’m really happy that I’ve done my best, and I’m always grateful because my parents always support and accompany me wherever I go,” Marlene shared.
Looking to the future, Marlene hopes to continue competing at even higher levels, with dreams of representing Indonesia in the World Skateboarding Olympics. With her determination and the skills she’s developed through local and national competitions, Marlene is well on her way to achieving her goals.
