Brighton JHS student Leandra Qonita has been making waves with her passionate advocacy for gender equality. Through her art and voice, Leandra has been raising awareness on this important issue, driven by a deep belief in fairness, justice, and respect for everyone.
Leandra was inspired to choose gender equality as her SFA project topic because of her observations of people’s experiences and her commitment to championing a more equitable world. “I’ve always been moved by stories of struggle and resilience,” Leandra shares. “It’s about creating a world where everyone, regardless of gender, can thrive equally.”
For her final assignment project, Leandra poured her heart into creating a powerful song titled “Through Your Eyes”. The songwriting process was deeply influenced by her exposure to disheartening content in the media, where podcasters and commentators frequently objectify women. “Watching videos where women are told they belong in the kitchen and hearing derogatory, sexist comments made me realize just how pervasive these attitudes still are,” she explains. Moreover, she was profoundly affected by news reports about women in certain countries being denied education due to oppressive rules. These eye-opening experiences led Leandra to recognize the ongoing struggles for gender equality worldwide and fueled her determination to address these important issues through her music, “I want people to recognize the strength and capabilities of women,” she says. “We need to stop underestimating women and start showing them the respect they deserve”.
From “Through Your Eyes”, Leandra hopes to inspire a shift in perspectives and encourage a broader conversation about gender equality. Her message is clear: respect and equality are fundamental human rights that should be afforded to everyone.
